Updates on Junction One
JUNCTION ONE IS FIRST IN UK TO GETS ITS SEGWAY WHEELS IN MOTION
New York City Police Department has them, famous golfers use them, well-known theme parks have them and now the security team at Junction One International Outlet Centre, Antrim, are the newest owners of the Segway Personal Transporters.
Junction One, which celebrated its third birthday in May of this year, is the first centre in Northern Ireland to have purchased the increasingly popular Segway vehicles and the first shopping centre in Ireland using it for security purposes.
The Segway is a two-wheeled, self balancing transportation device which was invented by Dean Kamen and unveiled in 2001.
Junction One centre manager Hugh Black said the Segway transporter was proving very popular. “We’re delighted to be the first centre in Ireland to have these Segway vehicles. The security team at Junction One has a large area of space to cover which will be further increased when the centre’s next phase of outlet shopping opens in September this year.
“The Segway is perfect for Junction One. The vehicle is designed to be used on footpaths and pedestrian areas and allows our security staff to get around the centre much more quickly”, says Mr Black.
Computers and motors in the base keep the Segway upright at all times. Users lean forward to go forward, back to move backwards, and turn by leaning left and right. Segway PTs are driven by electric motors at up to 12.5 mph.
